Need Help Paying for Veterinary Care?

From pet insurance and companies facilitating payment plans to community collaborations and pet health foundations, there are ample resources these days to help families care for their pets. Please see the list of resources below and let us know if there are any we should add!

Resources to Help You Pay for Care

*Please note that many of these require applications, have eligibility criteria (income limits), and have limited resources so might not be able to help everyone in need.

*Your veterinary clinic might not be aware of some of these resources, so this would be a good opportunity to share with them as well.

  • American Veterinary Medical Foundation - provides grants to help with pet medical care

  • AlignCare Health - partners with veterinary clinics to provide payment for up to 80% of the veterinary services needed (*the veterinary clinic must be a partner of AlignCare Health)

  • Vet Billing - partners with veterinary clinics to offer payment plans to pet owners (*The veterinary clinic much be a partner of Vet Billing)

  • Care Credit - credit card that can be used for routine veterinary care, emergency services, surgeries, and other procedures, as well as for your own dental and other health needs

  • FETCH a Cure - provides financial aid to help with pet cancer treatment

  • The Riedel & Cody Fund - provides financial assistance for pets needing cancer treatment

  • Red Rover - provides financial assistance, resources, and emotional support for pet owners struggling with economic hardship when pets are in life-threatening situations (average grant = $250)

  • The Pet Fund - provides financial assistance for pets with medical needs such as cancer treatment, heart disease, chronic conditions, endocrine diseases, eye diseases, etc.

  • The Mosby Foundation - assists in the care for critically sick, injured, abused and neglected dogs

  • Frankie's Friends - helps with the treatment of emergency and specialty medical conditions where the pet would otherwise suffer, be euthanized, or relinquished without proper veterinary care. (maximum grant = $2,000)

  • Pets-DC - provides support for veterinary for DC-based pet owners living with HIV/AIDS or other disabling conditions

  • Pets of the Homeless - provides assistance for pets in need of emergency medical care whose owners are experiencing homelessness

  • Bow Wow Buddies Foundation - urgent medical care and aids with veterinary bills for serious conditions

Pet Insurance

*It is important to note that pet insurance is most effective if purchased before a problem arises. Many companies will not cover costs for treatment after a diagnosis is made. 

*Whenever you get a pet, it is always best to decide up front if pet insurance is right for your financial circumstance.
